Critical Care Program

NEMSA’s Critical Care Paramedic course is a fast-paced 118 hour curriculum that prepares the learner to transport critically ill patients from one facility to another.  The course curriculum is similar to the University of Maryland - Baltimore County curriculum and prepares the learner to challenge the CCP-C examination offered by the International Board of Specialty Certification.  The course is offered twice a year in February and August.

Course specifics:
  • Learners, once enrolled, are assigned 12 hours of prerequisite online computer-based training (video) assignments, which must be completed before the first week of class.
  • Lectures are delivered in our virtual classroom environment.  The virtual classroom permits live interaction with the instructor and assistants during classes.  There are twelve four-hour lecture sessions (one each week); each lecture is offered twice each week.
  • Online material is delivered via our learning management system.  We currently use Canvas as our LMS for the course.  There are generally four hours of discussion boards and homework assigned each week via Canvas. Homework includes readings, videos, and short research assignments; the material both augments the lectures and provides exposure to the most current subject matter in critical care.
  • Our textbook is Critical Care Transport, 2nd edition, currently available from Jones and Bartlett Publishing.
  • A hands-on skills session occurs at the end of each lecture series.  Students spend two days learning ventilators, infusion pumps, and engaging in simulations.  Testing occurs at the end of each skills session.

Students who attend all lectures and successfully complete all classwork are awarded 118 hours of continuing education.  All sections of the course are accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE).  Students who pass the skills and final written exam are awarded a completion certificate.

Current costs:
  • Acadian employees with management approval are not charged for the class.
  • External customers:  Tuition $1,000.00 (does not include textbook) plus lodging for skills session if learner travels from outside Lafayette for skills session.

Note: A few learners opt to just take the online and virtual classroom portions of the course and do not test skills, with the intent of using the course as a “prep course” for one of the specialty exams above.  There is no discount for “al la carte” - tuition grants the learner access to all the course material, and the learner will receive credit only for the completed portions.

Registration is now closed.

Classes are in session for 14 weeks.

The final week (June 4), students will engage in hands-on training at our Lafayette facility.
